BARGUVO
PREVENTIVE GUIDE

How to avoid scams on Wallapop before paying, shipping or meeting up

Prevention is not about guessing whether the other person “is trustworthy”. It is about checking the next step before it becomes hard to undo: keeping the conversation traceable, confirming the item and the real status of the transaction, telling a user’s request apart from an official flow, and not turning screenshots, urgency or reputation into absolute proof.

Key idea: a single warning sign does not prove a scam, and a reassuring sign does not guarantee a transaction either. If a material detail is missing, keep it as unknown and look for the check that could most change your decision.

Prevention happens before the click, the payment, the payout or the shipment.

What are you about to do?

The right check depends on the step you are about to take, not on how many “signs” have piled up.

First: separate what you have been told from what you have checked

In a second-hand transaction, the same claim can reach you through channels of very different strength. Where a piece of information comes from and what backs it up are not the same thing.

Stated

Someone, or the listing itself, claims it: “works perfectly”, “it’s already paid”, “I’m support”, “it comes with an invoice”.

Useful as starting information, not as confirmation.
Observable / provided

A screenshot, photo, document, message, video or receipt you can see, but whose context or authenticity may still need checking.

Seeing something does not always prove what it seems to prove.
Confirmed

A status you check yourself by going into the official flow, or through an independent check suited to the specific question.

Example: opening the app yourself and reviewing the transaction or the wallet.
Unknown

A material detail you do not have yet: exact variant, a specific function working, payment actually received, identity requested by the official flow.

Unknown does not mean false; it means you should not fill the gap with an assumption.
Barguvo approach

Strength rule: the harder the next step is to undo, the less you should rely on what is stated or on an isolated screenshot, and the more on a check you can reproduce on your own.

A

PRE-FLIGHT

Before you continue: five checks that prevent decisions made on autopilot

By the end you will have: an answer about what still needs checking before the next step.

1

Item

Do the model, variant, condition, defects, accessories and quantity match what you actually want to buy or hand over?

2

Channel

Does the move to WhatsApp, email, SMS, a call, a link or an external payment meet a real need, or does it only reduce traceability?

3

Action

Do you know exactly what you are authorising: receiving money, sending it, accepting a request, sharing a detail, confirming a delivery or cancelling?

4

Real status

Does the app, website or service you opened yourself show the same status that the message or screenshot claims?

5

Reversibility

If the information were false or incomplete, could you undo the step? If the answer is “hardly”, raise the level of checking.

Do not switch channel on autopilot

Leaving the chat does not by itself prove fraudulent intent: someone may prefer to arrange a pickup by phone or send a large video through another channel. The problem arises when the change of channel becomes the place where you are asked to pay, enter credentials, hand over codes or accept a version of the transaction you cannot cross-check on Wallapop.

Official

Wallapop recommends keeping the conversation and the buying/selling steps within its flows where applicable, and considers links, payments or shipments that try to take the transaction outside the expected environment especially suspicious.

Pressure changes the pace, not the evidence you need

“Someone else is interested”, “the courier is coming now” or “I can only do it today” may be true statements. But none of them reduces the need to check the amount, the item, what the step actually is and the status of the transaction. A good preventive rule is not to let someone else’s urgency decide how much you verify.

Ask in a way that can be verified

Instead of “is it OK?”, ask for specific proof: a photo of the defect mentioned, a video of the function you care about, the exact model visible in the settings or on the label, the accessories included, or confirmation of the status within the flow itself. If your main doubt is already whether a specific listing is consistent, your intent has changed: use the guide on how to check whether a listing looks fake or inconsistent instead of turning PREVENT into an authenticity detector.

B

LINKS, IDENTITY AND CODES

Do not confuse “looks official” with “I started it from the official flow”

By the end you will have: a way to tell a link, document or code you received apart from a process you actually started yourself.

LINK

Go back on your own

If you receive an unexpected link to get paid, pay, verify your identity or manage a shipment, open the app or website through your own access and check whether the same step exists.

KYC

The context of the document matters

A user asking you for a DNI (Spanish national ID card) is not the same as a regulated verification process started within Wallapop.

2FA

A code is for your session

If you get a code or approval request you did not ask for, do not give it to anyone else and do not approve it under pressure.

Official KYC vs. “send me your DNI”

There are two situations that may look similar but do not mean the same thing. A buyer or seller may ask for a photo of an ID document “to show trust”; that is a request between users and it increases the exposure of personal data. By contrast, Wallapop does document an identity validation (KYC) for certain wallet actions, such as transferring sales money to a bank account or certain top-ups. That process is carried out from the app or website and may include documents and two-step verification.

Request between users

“Send me your DNI over chat”

It does not make anyone legitimate and can expose data you do not need to share to decide on a purchase or sale. The image of a document you receive does not prove it belongs to the person you are chatting with either.

Official process

KYC started within Wallapop

It can be legitimate when the platform itself requires it for a specific feature. Go in on your own, check that the process appears there and follow only the instructions of the flow you opened yourself.

Official

As of 24 August 2026, Wallapop states that its KYC may require a DNI, passport, residence permit or driving licence depending on the case, and that the verified identity badge is not a guarantee about the person, the product or the transaction.

Use two-step verification as a preventive control

Wallapop offers two-step verification on the web and on devices, and applies it in processes such as logging in, changing bank details or validating your identity when you are about to receive a payment. The preventive value is not memorising the exact screen, but recognising the pattern: if you did not start the action, do not reflexively approve a request that shows up by email or SMS. Open your account through your own access and review what is happening.

Barguvo approach

An unexpected code does not prove your account has already been compromised, but it is a reason not to share it, to review sessions/account status on your own and to strengthen access before continuing with a transaction of any value.

C

PAYING, GETTING PAID AND SHIPPING

The real status outweighs a screenshot, SMS or promise

By the end you will have: a working rule to decide whether you can pay, get paid or ship without relying on weak proof.

You are toldWhat you actually haveWhat to check before moving on
“I’ve already paid you”A screenshot, email, SMS or forwarded messageOpen the payment channel, wallet or transaction yourself and confirm the relevant status.
“Pay here to activate/unlock the shipment”A link with a logo and convincing textGo back to the app/website through your own access and check whether the transaction really requires that step.
“I’ll hold it for you if you send a deposit”A promise of a reservation or a refundTell an external transfer/request apart from a reservation handled within the official flow.
“Ship it now; it’ll update later”A receipt or an explanationDo not hand over the item until the status you need can be checked in the right channel.

If you are buying: define what you need to know before paying

  1. Item identity: model, variant, capacity, size or version that changes its value.
  2. Relevant condition: defects, repairs, locks, wear or functions that affect your decision.
  3. Contents: accessories, parts, documentation or items included.
  4. Effective cost: do not treat a shipping, protection or fee cost that is still unknown as if it were zero.
  5. Channel and reversibility: understand what protection the method keeps before authorising the payment.

If the missing information is visual —for example, a label, model number, dent, screen switched on or accessories— do not ask for “more photos” in general. Ask for the shot that resolves the doubt. The guide on photos to check an item and sell it better explains what visual evidence tends to be useful without pretending that an image certifies authenticity.

If you are selling: before getting paid, shipping or handing over

  1. Check the real status of the payment. Do not ship because a screenshot “looks like a bank’s”.
  2. Check which transaction you are following. Do not let a link you received become your only source of truth.
  3. Document the condition and contents before sealing the parcel. Do it to keep context, not as a promise that any video will automatically be decisive proof.
  4. Do not change the item, address, carrier or method under pressure. A change may be legitimate, but it requires checking the conditions again.
  5. Minimise data. Share only what the chosen flow needs; do not use personal documents as a currency of trust.
Official

Wallapop warns about links, payments or shipments that try to move a legitimate transaction to external channels and recommends checking processes from the app/website. The interface may change; the stable rule is that a screenshot sent by someone else does not replace the status you can verify yourself.

An official reservation and an external deposit are not the same

A deposit via Bizum or bank transfer may be part of an agreement between private individuals, but it is not equivalent to a reservation handled within Wallapop. That difference matters because it changes traceability, protection and the possibility of cancelling. Nor does it mean every external deposit is a scam: it means you should know what you lose by leaving the flow and not describe as “Wallapop protection” something the platform is not handling.

Community signal

Recent accounts still show friction around deposits, money requests and fake confirmations. They help design this check —read the action and verify the outcome—, not turn a specific method into automatic proof of fraud.

D

BUYING OR HANDING OVER IN PERSON

Inspect before confirming: the order matters

By the end you will have: an in-person flow that puts checking the product before closing the handover.

1

Agree

The exact item, price, place and conditions are clear before the meeting.

2

Inspect

Check the item’s identity, its condition and the function that really matters for the purchase.

3

Resolve

If a discrepancy appears, ask or renegotiate before confirming, not after.

4

Confirm

Only when what you checked matches what was agreed, complete the corresponding handover/payment step.

“Pagar antes de quedar” (pay before meeting): a reservation within the official flow

As of 24 August 2026, Wallapop documents an in-person buying option called “En persona → Pagar antes de quedar” (In person → Pay before meeting). It lets you pay through Wallapop before the meeting; once the seller accepts, the money stays protected until the buyer confirms receipt. The platform also states that, with this option, buyer and seller can cancel the purchase before completing it.

Official

The same Wallapop help page recommends checking the product and its condition carefully during the meeting and warns that, with this in-person option, once the handover is confirmed Wallapop cannot mediate and offers no claim for a defective product or one different from what was offered. That is why the preventive order is inspect → resolve doubts → confirm.

Do not turn the QR code or the final button into an automatic formality

At an in-person meeting, the moment of confirming carries weight because it closes part of the flow. You do not need to memorise where each button will be in a future version of the app. You need to keep a stable rule: do not confirm receipt/handover before checking what you could reasonably have detected in person. If the test needs time, battery, a connection, an extra part or a setting you do not have there, decide beforehand whether you accept that unknown or postpone closing the deal.

A public place does not replace checking the product

Meeting in a busy place may reduce certain personal risks, but it does not verify a serial number, a battery, a previous repair or whether a console works. Keep physical safety separate from verifying the item: both matter and neither replaces the other.

E

PROFILE AND LISTING

Use reputation, price and photos as context, not as guarantees

By the end you will have: a reading that reduces both false alarms and false confidence.

✓

Account age, verifications and ratings

A consistent history can add to the context available. It does not make every future transaction safe. Even Wallapop’s verified identity badge is officially described as a verification, not as a guarantee of the product or the transaction.

€

Price out of line with the market

A big difference calls for an explanation: model, condition, genuine urgency, accessories, defects or comparables. There is no universal percentage that automatically turns a low price into a “scam”.

⌕

Photos and consistency

Check whether the images let you identify the real object and its relevant details. A nice, professional or AI-generated/edited image does not by itself prove either fraud or good condition.

?

What is missing

If the decision depends on a detail that is not there, do not turn it into suspicion or confidence. Mark it as unknown and ask for the proof that can resolve it.

Popular shortcutWhy it is too absoluteBarguvo check
“Lots of ratings = safe”The history adds context; it does not guarantee this transaction or this item.Check the next step and the specific product.
“New profile = fraud”There are also legitimate sellers with no history.Give the profile less weight and ask for specific evidence.
“Always film the unboxing and you are covered”It can preserve context, but it is not a universal guarantee of a resolution.Document in a useful way and know the rules of the flow you are using.
“If they ask you for X, cancel automatically”The same element can appear in legitimate and fraudulent contexts; KYC is a good example.Work out who is asking, where it appears and which action you started yourself.
Not verified

Fixed thresholds such as “if it costs X % less it is fraud” or “if it has X reviews you can trust it” are simplified clues, not conclusions. A clue, not a conclusion.

F

STATUSES AND DECISION

What to do when you can check, a detail is missing or the evidence does not settle it

By the end you will have: a preventive status and the next most valuable check.

CHECKABLE

I can verify the step

The material information matches a source or status you can check properly. Even so, it does not mean zero risk.

UNKNOWN

I am missing information

A necessary detail is missing. Do not fill it with “I’m sure that…” or with “this smells like…”. Decide which specific proof could resolve it.

INCONCLUSIVE

There is evidence, but it is not enough

You have messages, photos or signs, but they do not let you resolve the doubt responsibly. You can slow down, change the conditions or knowingly accept that uncertainty.

Which detail could change your decision

Before paying

A photo/measurement/model/function test that confirms the variant or condition that changes the value.

Before shipping

The real status of the payment or transaction, opened by you, confirming that the payment exists.

Before confirming in person

A specific inspection of the screen, battery, serial number, clasp, engine, accessory or relevant function.

Before sharing your identity

Check that the request is part of a KYC that appears within the official flow you started yourself.

The question “what would make me change my mind?” avoids two opposite mistakes: piling up signs that add nothing, or deciding too early based on an impression. If no reasonable check can resolve the doubt and the step is hard to undo, stopping may be the rational decision even if you cannot claim there is a scam.

Buyer: short checklist before paying

  • Exact item and variant.
  • Condition and material defects.
  • Specific proof for whatever is still UNKNOWN.
  • Effective cost and payment channel understood.
  • Real status of the transaction checked by you.
  • In-person inspection plan, if applicable.

Seller: short checklist before shipping or handing over

  • Item and contents sufficiently documented.
  • Payment checked in the corresponding channel.
  • No unexpected link or code used as a substitute for the real flow.
  • Changes of address/method reviewed before acting.
  • Personal data minimised.
  • In person, do not close before the other party can reasonably inspect the product.
G

TRICKY CASES

Bizum, AI, documents and fake support: control the action, not the script

By the end you will have: four checks that keep working even when messages and interfaces change.

1. Bizum, deposits and money requests

If you are expecting to receive a deposit and a notification appears, do not confirm by reflex. Read whether you are receiving money, sending it or accepting a request, check the amount and recipient, and then check the result in the service itself. The check does not depend on memorising a colour or a particular screen. It depends on understanding which way the money is moving.

An external deposit can be a legitimate agreement between private individuals, but do not present it as if it had the same protection as a reservation handled by Wallapop. If the reason is “so nobody else buys it”, compare that request with the options the platform currently offers for certain in-person purchases.

2. “Too perfect” photos and AI

A polished image does not prove manipulation, and a realistic image does not prove the object is in the condition shown either. Ask for evidence of the specific object: defects, label, materials, sides, accessories and a test of the relevant function. Barguvo keeps to the principle: AI can improve the presentation, but it must never change the apparent condition, identity or real features of the product.

3. DNI, invoices and badges

An invoice can give context about the purchase or model, but it may not prove current ownership or condition. A photo of a DNI sent over chat may belong to someone else. And an official verified identity badge confirms that a verification process took place, but Wallapop expressly states that it does not fully guarantee the identity or the transaction. Use each element for the question it can actually answer.

4. Support, codes and messages that know details

A message knowing the name of the item, the amount or part of the conversation does not prove it comes from the service. If it asks for credentials, a card, a code or an urgent action, stop treating the message as a source. Go into Wallapop on your own and check whether an equivalent issue or request exists. If you need to understand the impersonation or fraud pattern you are seeing, switch to the guide on scams and risk patterns on Wallapop.

If something has already happened, PREVENT is no longer the main guide

If there has already been a charge, transfer, shipment, handover, shared credentials, an approved code or a dispute, do not keep piling up prevention as if the step were still pending. Keep the conversation, listing, dates, receipts and the visible status of the transaction; use the official support/reporting features and act on the affected channel. Prevention can explain what went wrong, but the intent is now recovery or handling the incident.

Barguvo guides, it does not certify.
It can sort what is confirmed, what is unknown and the next check before you decide.

FAQ

Does paying by Bizum outside Wallapop always mean it is a scam?

No. The method alone does not prove fraud. But an external payment or deposit is not equivalent to a reservation handled within the official flow and can change traceability, protection and reversibility. Read exactly which action you are authorising and check the result in the service itself.

Is sending a Bizum to reserve the same as using “Pagar antes de quedar”?

No. “Pagar antes de quedar” (pay before meeting) is an official option for certain in-person purchases handled within Wallapop. A deposit via Bizum or bank transfer is an external agreement between private individuals. Neither difference proves fraud on its own, but the protections and tracking are not equivalent.

Should I confirm the handover before or after checking the product in person?

First check the item and its condition reasonably, resolve any discrepancies and then confirm. Wallapop warns that with the in-person “Pagar antes de quedar” option it does not mediate or offer a claim for a defective or different product once the handover has been confirmed.

Can Wallapop ask me for my DNI to verify my identity?

Yes, in certain wallet KYC processes the platform may require identity documents from its app or website. That is different from another user asking you to send them a photo of your DNI over chat.

What do I do if I receive a 2FA code I did not request?

Do not share it or approve it under pressure. Go into Wallapop on your own, review the activity and secure your access. An unexpected code does not prove on its own that the account is compromised, but it does deserve a check before continuing.

Is an old account or one with verified identity enough to trust?

No. They are context signals. Wallapop’s own help states that the verified identity badge is not a guarantee of the product, of the transaction or that a person is entirely who they claim to be.

Is a payment screenshot enough to ship the product?

It should not be your only check. A screenshot is information provided to you; verify the real status of the payment, wallet or transaction by going into the corresponding channel yourself before handing over the item.

Is a link with the Wallapop logo safe?

Not necessarily. Appearance can be copied. If the link is unexpected, go back to the service from the app or an official address you open yourself and check whether the same step exists there.

Does a very low price mean the listing is fake?

No. It may justify extra checking of the model, condition, accessories and comparables, but there is no universal percentage that automatically turns a low price into fraud.

Does filming the packing or unboxing guarantee I will win a claim?

It should not be presented as a universal guarantee. It can preserve useful context, but the resolution depends on the flow, the conditions and the evidence accepted in each case.

What does UNKNOWN mean in this guide?

That a detail needed for the decision is missing. It does not mean “scam”. If there is already evidence but it still does not let you resolve the doubt responsibly, the right status may be INCONCLUSIVE.

Can Barguvo guarantee that a transaction is safe?

No. Barguvo can organise information, contradictions, signs and pending checks, but it does not certify people, listings or outcomes and it does not remove the risk of a transaction between private individuals.
