Three layers you must keep apart
listing policy, eBay protection and the law.
The Customer Guarantee covers most eligible transactions when the item does not arrive, arrives damaged/faulty/wrong or the seller does not comply with the published returns policy. It has requirements, exclusions and time limits.
Not received: start with the order date
the tracking and the estimated date give the claim its structure.
For “item not received”, the current policy sets a maximum of 30 calendar days from the estimated or actual delivery date or the collection date to report the problem, within the Guarantee's requirements. The seller has a period in which to respond and the case can be escalated to eBay.
Do not turn that “30 days” into a rule for any return. It applies to specific procedures and the policy itself provides for extensions in certain situations.
Does not match the listing: document the difference
condition, wrong part, damage or defect must be described with facts.
Compare the item received with the listing's title, description, photos and item specifics. Take photos of the problem, of the packaging if relevant and of the serial number when it is prudent. “I do not like it” and “it is substantially different” are different reasons.
If eBay or the seller requires a return, keep the proof of shipping and follow the address/label provided. The policy may keep a return request open for specific periods; do not rely on an isolated figure without reviewing the case.
Barguvo can organise evidence and scenarios without carrying out actions on eBay.
The seller must respond within the flow
ignoring a request can make the outcome worse.
The policy requires the seller to offer a solution when the transaction is covered and a problem is reported. Depending on the case, the seller may provide tracking, accept a return or issue a refund.
The seller can also appeal decisions within the set time limits when there is new information. Keeping clear documentation from the moment of shipping reduces the need to reconstruct facts weeks later.
Change of mind: check the policy and the type of seller
not every item bought from a private individual comes with an automatic right of withdrawal.
When the item is correct and you have simply changed your mind, the seller's voluntary returns policy becomes especially important. If you buy from a business as a consumer in the EU, there may be additional legal rights, including withdrawal from distance sales, with exceptions.
Do not attribute those rights to the “eBay Guarantee”. They are an independent legal layer and the specific analysis depends on the product, the seller and the jurisdiction.
Avoid duplicate claims
opening several processes at once can affect coverage.
eBay states that a buyer cannot seek a resolution for the same transaction under more than one protection programme at the same time; for example, a parallel chargeback can lead eBay to close its case.
Before starting another route, check the status of the request and what evidence is missing. If you need individual legal advice, this guide does not replace it.
Practical timeline
use the order dates, not rough memory.
Compare the order and the item.
Photos, messages, tracking.
Use the correct reason.
Complete the actions and meet the deadlines.
Ask for help if appropriate.
A clear timeline should record the estimated/actual date, the opening of the request, the response, the return shipment and any escalation. It is more useful than a folder of screenshots with no context.
Barguvo prepares evidence; eBay decides on its programme
platform protection does not replace legal advice.
Barguvo can help you organise the evidence, calculate scenarios and prepare a decision, but the final action belongs to eBay. It does not publish listings, bid, buy, pay or send offers or messages on your behalf.
When a figure, time limit or programme depends on the category, account, country or the listing itself, the information eBay shows in that specific flow takes precedence. This reference is dated 25 August 2026 and was designed to require dynamic data to be revalidated before any real publication.
Return cases: choosing the right reason matters
the same desired outcome may involve different procedures.
Not-received case: first compare the estimated date with the tracking status. If the relevant time limit has passed, open the problem from the order with the correct reason. Keeping a screenshot of an external conversation does not replace the delivery information eBay uses in its policy.
Damaged-item case: photograph the product and, when it helps explain the damage, the packaging. Do not handle or repair it before documenting if that could make it harder to know how it arrived. Describe which function or part is affected and compare it with the original listing.
Wrong-variant case: a different colour, capacity or size can be an objective discrepancy. Keep a photo of the label/reference and the listing. If the seller offered variants, also check which one appears on the order; sometimes the error is in the selection, not in the shipment.
Change-of-mind case: if the item matches the listing, review the seller's voluntary policy and, if the seller is a business, the applicable consumer rights. Do not falsely select “does not match the description” to force a return; that degrades the evidence system and may breach policies.
Authenticity case: if the item was part of an authentication programme, the flow may have specific steps. If it was not, document the technical reasons for your doubts and avoid categorical conclusions without an expert assessment. AUTH retains ownership of the programme's eligibility and scope.
In any case, create a minimal timeline: purchase, estimated/actual delivery, detection of the problem, first contact, opening of the request, response, return and escalation. This reduces memory errors and lets you see immediately which time limit is still open.
How to apply this guide to a real case without losing traceability
a good decision can be reconstructed later from a few clear pieces of evidence.
To use this guide in a real transaction, first create a minimal case record. There is no need to copy all of eBay: keep only the data that changes the decision. To open or respond to an issue, the core fields are reason, dates, listing, condition on receipt, tracking and actions. If one is missing, mark it as unknown instead of filling it in with an assumption.
Every material claim should be traceable back to a piece of evidence: the order, a photo or an eBay record. If the data comes from the other party, label it as declared; if it appears directly in the listing or order, as observable; if you provide a photo or document, as evidence provided. “Confirmed” should be reserved for what has genuinely passed an appropriate check.
Also distinguish between the date of observation and the date of the event. A fee checked today may apply to a future sale under different conditions; a sale closed six months ago may still be comparable, but it is not a recent observation. This separation makes it possible to update the guide without rewriting history and avoids presenting old data as current.
When two sources conflict, do not automatically choose the figure that favours your goal. Prioritise the official source specific to the flow, check the country, category and date, and keep the conflict on record if you cannot resolve it. A specific checkout interface may be more specific than a general page; an old screenshot may be less reliable than the current help page.
The result must express the level of certainty. If the data is solid, you can give a direct recommendation; if important elements are missing, widen the range or ask for a specific check. If the evidence exists but is not enough to decide, use “inconclusive”. That label does not mean the same as “unknown”: in one case the evidence is insufficient and in the other the data is missing.
Finally, do not turn Barguvo's recommendation into the resolution of the case. The assistant explains what evidence supports a decision, what uncertainty remains and what the next safe step is. The execution and the actual contractual status belong to the eBay flow or, where applicable, to the parties and the applicable law.
This approach also makes SEO maintenance easier. If eBay changes a figure or a feature, the affected block and its review date are updated without altering stable principles such as separating the asking price from the sold price, reputation from authenticity, or platform protection from legal rights. The guide stays useful even if the interface changes.
Before closing the transaction, do a reverse reading: imagine that a month from now you have to explain why you made that decision. If you cannot reconstruct it with the data you kept, traceability is missing. If you can do it with a few clear pieces of evidence, the process is sufficiently documented without turning an everyday purchase or sale into a disproportionate investigation.
Open the official help page or flow and confirm the specific details of your transaction.
FAQ
Does the Customer Guarantee cover all purchases?
No. It covers most eligible transactions, with requirements and exclusions.
Do I always have 30 days to return?
No. That time limit appears in specific procedures such as not received; the return period may depend on the policy, the reason and legal rights.
If I buy from a business, do I have more rights?
As a consumer in the EU there may be additional legal rights. They must be kept separate from the eBay Guarantee.
Can I open an eBay claim and a chargeback at the same time?
The policy warns against duplicate claims for the same transaction and may close the eBay case.
What evidence should I keep?
The listing, photos of the condition on receipt, messages within eBay, tracking and relevant documents, avoiding unnecessary PII.
Does Barguvo decide on the refund?
No. It can organise evidence and time limits; eBay, the seller and, where applicable, the law determine the resolution.
Operational information revalidated on 25/08/2026. Fees, time limits, programmes, categories and eligibility are dynamic; the specific information eBay shows in the current listing, checkout, order or help page prevails.
